Running LoCuS Labs

This informative page is intended to help students run LoCuS .

Getting Started

If you have never downloaded a LoCuS lab you must first create your lab id by answering the three questions on the login page and then select register.

After you have created an id you must answer the three questions on the login page with the same answer each time you wish to complete a lab.

Downloading a Lab

After entering your id (through the three questions) you will be directed to a page for the lab.

To open the lab click on the provided download link. Once the file has downloaded click to open it. You will see a message similar to the one below. Select the check box and click Run..

Note that it may take a minute or so until the lab appears on your screen.

If you are having trouble make sure that you have the most recent version of java by using the available java test.

Connection Lost

When running the lab you must be connected to the internet at all times in order for your answers to be submitted and for you to receive credit for the lab. If at anytime this connection is lost you will see the message below. If this occurs you must start the lab from the begining. If you are unsure if your answers have been submitted please contact one of the individuals listed below.

Syntax Errors

When starting the lab you may see the image below.

If this occurs you can still run the lab by clicking okay for any of these windows that appear. You can eliminate these messages by changing a setting in Internet Explorer by following the steps listed below.

  • Open Internet Explorer and then click on the tools menu at the top right hand corner underneath the red 'X'.
  • Click on 'Internet Options' which is toward the bottom of the list.
  • Select the 'Connections' tab at the top of the new window.
  • Click on the 'LAN Settings' button towards the bottom of the window.
  • Deselect the first checkbox option which reads 'Automatically detect settings'.
  • Click 'OK' to close the open windows.

Troubleshooting

If you continue to have problems running the labs on your own computer it is suggested that you use one of the machines in either computer science lab.
